Hi kids! Just popped in in the wee wee hours to say "hey". Been working like crazy, flying to Florida frequently to see my new bff Tom (my long lost son, for those of you who remember) and losing my mind after the hurricane and the holiday season. My parents' house was trashed in Pearland (we were sitting in the dark with the power out while the ceilings were falling in all around us, but that's a story for another day) but it's totally rebuilt and better than new and ready for them to grow old and kill each other in since they're both retired and getting on each others' nerves every day. Of course they were staying in a State Farm funded furnished condo until the day before Christmas, but their "from nothing left but a frame" four-month rebuild was lightning speed record-time for most Houstonians...
So annnyyyyyyway, I've been living in my own little casa since November (didn't really have computer set-up until then after Ike)... and working my ass off through another shitty holiday season at Kohls. Still there, still insane.
Hope to check in more often, and from reading the DR archives, thanks for worrying about me.
Y'all wanna know what the crappiest thing Hurricane Ike did? Hit Houston before the BB finale which I never did see ... Don't know what was worse... no power, or no cable.
Shallow? Me? Yep.
~tata for now!

So I find myself in need of a little help from the more tech savvy among you. As you may or may not be aware I am moving this weekend, and while I will still be a scant 50ish miles from the nation's capital, it's still considered something of the boonies. My internet options are pretty sparse, so I've purchased one of these broadband doohickeys which I'm told, once inserted into my laptop, will make the interweb magically appear. The doofus at RadioShack informs me that I get 5 gig per month on this thing. He tried to explain what that meant to me in terms of downloading music, web pages, etc.., but my question to you good people is-how does this effect my live feed viewing?

Mar 13 2009, 07:58 PM
Hey, Bee!
Good luck with the move! How exciting!
Found
something that will hopefully help you.

Bee,
"Broadband doohickeys" is a bit ambiguous. Can you share some more info about the name of the product, the name of the service provider, or even point out the product on Radio Shack's website? As for the 5 GByte DL limit, that pretty much rules out watching any video stream for any amount of time - 15 to 30 minutes of video will chew up your monthly limit. It almost sounds like the device you purchased is some sort of wireless broadband product that will hook you up to a cellphone broadband network. That will work fine for email, cruising web pages, even downloading (smallish) video clips but not streaming.
Again, I don't know what the broadband infrastructure is like around you but if there is no internet offered through a cable provider and no DSL offered by a phone service then your options are not good. Satellite internet is about the only other option.
ETA: i went back and looked at the math with FF's handy chart and maybe it isn't as bad as I thought. With the low bit rate version of the BB feed, you could get around (roughtly) 100 hours of streaming. Obviously, the higher quality the streaming video the bigger the problem would be but I've watched the lower quality feed plenty of times and it worked fine. You can't sit it on the feed and let it run all day obviously but if you avg. 3 hours a day then you shouldn't hit the limit.

Z, are you sure you are not confusing your Giga with Mega? The link I provided seems to imply that one could view about 97 hours of video in one month.

yeah, I was over the top in my initial estimate. I think BB has a low bandwidth stream that will fit in to that 90 hour + estimate

What-broadband doohickey doesn't narrow it down enough?!
It is indeed what you surmised, and in fact, appears to be
this.That's a great chart
ff-thanks. 97 hours I can live with-although allowing a little time for the rest of my online needs-maybe we'll say 2.5 hours per day. Good to know the low quality feed (and isn't all of BB pretty much under the heading "low quality"?) is still watchable
Z. I did take an oath after all, and new home or no-I can't let my recapping suffer.
Sadly, I do seem to fall just out of range of all the cable and DSL providers. I looked into satellite, but that looked even more costly and I wasn't convinced enough of the quality to pay for it. If anyone has satellite internet and loves it I'd be interested to know. Although I did just sign a two year contract on the doohickey.

Bee, I am appalled that your FIRST consideration when looking for a new home was not "How will this affect my recapping duties?"

Good Luck with the moving BEE and the new internet adventure, I do hope you get it all worked out before BB11 starts this summer cause you and FF are a riot with the recaps. I hope you get another boy toy to enjoy this season.
I will be looking for a new place to move in May so I am feeling your pain of packing, loading, un loading and putting away stuff. My refridge with the ice maker in the door and my full size washer/dryer has bee in storage for years while I suffered with a mini set so I am excited to get my own old stuff out to reuse. SO Sick of ice trays. Hope your new life in your new home makes you very happy!

Well we had a slight hitch with the Broadband doohickey. Before I purchased it I told the RadioShack doofus that I needed it to be Mac compatible. He assured me that it was. And technically it is. It's just to make it work with the Mac you first have to go ONLINE to download the appropriate software. Which, you know, if I could GET online I wouldn't need the confounded thing in the first place. So I trekked the 14 miles into "town" to find a Panera with free Wi Fi and it seems as though everything is working now. Although I haven't yet logged in from home.
*fingers crossed*
Mags-I am duly chastened. Since one of the previous owners edited an online parenting newsletter I rashly assumed she needed good internet access. But if I have to recap from this Panera all summer, by gum I will.
Angel-how exciting! Sounds like if you are getting your stuff out of storage this move will be for the better. But it sure is a hassle. I just got my new fridge today, but the water line isn't hooked up yet, so I am off to buy ice cube trays myself. Thanks for the good wishes-and I hope you find the perfect new place for yourself!
