Did you hear about the new Star Trek movie? I'm flippin' psyched!
gforce
I'm not sure what to make of it, Tsy. I will go see it of course, but I'm still not sure on the whole concept of the prequel. They were in pretty tricky waters with Enterprise (although I mostly enjoyed the series), but this one is a real gamble. It could either be great or wind up a mockery. We'll see, I guess.
Kyara
While I admit Sylar could make a perfect Spock, I'm not sure I still won't be waiting for him to cut someone's brain out of their head. Either way, I'm there!
RCToros
Isn't JJ Abrams (of Lost, Alias, Felicity fame) doing the StarTrek movie?
That guy can't miss! Even though I wandered away from Star Trek franchise after TNG went off the air, this news has me excited again.
Magpie
I agree with g; I just don't know about this. I faithfully watched every series until Enterprise, and I just could not get into that one (even though I like Scott Bakula).

Yes, he is. I know his work is pretty good. What I don't think I would want to a "re-imagining" of the series' into something that was no longer "Star Trek". If they hold true to the basic principles of it, it should be okay. From what I've read, I'm optimistic, but if I had my preferences, I would rather a "new" movie in the sense that it would be in the (slightly) post-TNG era. It worries me a bit whenever they say they want to pull "non-fans" into the movie (although that is a worthy goal in itself), but I think when tried before, it's had mixed results.

Like I say, I'm hopeful, but cautious.
Tsylyst
I'm not 100% sure about it, either, gforce. For one thing, Star Trek cannon has always seemed that the TOS crew didn't know each other until they got to Enterprise, except for Kirk and McCoy. But this movie seems to be casting Academy-age versions of most of the crew ... a crew that was diverse enough in age that they wouldn't have been at the Academy at the same time.

I was never a fan of "Enterprise" (the show) -- a prequel was a bad idea from the beginning. They were written into a corner before they even began.

But I'll be seeing the movie when it comes out, nonetheless.

From what I've read, he's a big fan so I imagine he will treat it well. Mission Impossible 3 was great, and I don't even like Tom Cruise. I think he re-invigorated that franchise. (do 3 movies make a franchise?)

I never watched any of the UPN Star Trek shows. I watched a little DS9 after TNG went off the air but that was more about wanting a ST fix instead of actually liking the show. The Bajorans were a major part of the storylines and I just never got into it. Bajorans were like a poor man's Vulcan.
gforce
DS9 was actually one of favourites, if not my favourite. Episodes like "By the Pale Moonlight" and "Inter arma enim silent leges" upped the ante as to what good Star Trek (and good television) was, I thought. Episodes like that really made one think about some pretty important issues.
Tsylyst
Agreed, g! DS9 was the best series, in my opinion.
Magpie
I agree about DS9, as well. And Sisko was my favorite captain.

I don't like hearing that they are gonna monkey around with the crew's ages and history just to have them all in the Academy at the same time. If something that basic is going to be tampered with, who knows what else will happen?

Of course, my spouse will go see it, no matter what.
MrsGryn
I'll fall into the Admin line and say that DS9 was also one of my favorites. I liked the larger story arcs that it encompassed, as opposed to Alien of the Week. Not to take anything away from the other series, but DS9's writers had a more difficult task.

Picard will always be my favorite captain, though.

The problem with "Enterprise" was not enough "this is how things got started for the Federation".

It'll mess up the time line, that's what! Have they never heard of the Temporal Prime Directive? Sheesh.

It's true that I always will have a special place in my heart for TNG, although a lot of the first two seasons were pretty bad in retrospect.
RCToros
Yikes. ALL the mods disagree with me. RC am scared.

My issues with that show stemmed from the fact that it was getting farther away from original ST. I know it was a different story telling style because they were a space station and not a starship. I never grew to love any of the characters besides Sisko and Odo.

And I was sad about TNG ending. Picard forever!
Magpie
Heh, I'm wondering if we need to open a new thread for ST talk, since we've kind of taken over this movie thread.
gforce
I think we should, mags!!

For on topic-ness, I think the three new Star Wars movies were pretty lame compared to the original trilogy. I was just telling someone the other day that I had wondered if it was just that I was remembering them better than they were - then I watched Empire Strikes Back and realized there was more entertainment in the first 10 mins of that that than in the new movies combined.
Towanda
Serenity rocked - except for that main character death and all. That sucked.

I don't know if I can get excited about an Enterprise Movie, though I'm a huge Trekkie. I usually hate prequels and this one just ticked me off from the beginning cause it meant I had to wait even longer for a "new" Trek series (if one even ever comes). (Mags - you have heard the Scott Bakula song right? If not, you need to.)

My first Sci-Fi movie was way way long ago when my Dad took me to see Star Wars in the theater multiple times. We saw The Black Hole too. I guess geekism runs in the family because my son is a huge Sci-Fi fan too.
We love watching Galaxy Quest together. By the power of Grapthar's Hammer....
Magpie
I need to find the lyrics to that song, I guess, because I can't make out 75% of what that guy is singing! (Old ears, I guess.)

I think Star Wars was my first Sci-Fi movie, too. I was in college when it first came out, and I loved it.
Towanda
Ask and ye shall receive. lyrics

And yeah, gforce, the original trilogy was way better than the new trilogy. Even my son agrees with me on that (though we squabble over Trek vs. Wars). He does like the new ones more than I do and just rolls his eyes at me when I don't automatically know the name of each weird new ship from the new ones. "Mo-om, don't you recognize the xyz-wing Vulture Droid hover craft transporter! Gosh!"
gforce
Wait! Inkyl, are you Zach's mom??
MrsGryn
Actually, I think she's my husband's mom.
Towanda
Oh you both suck. I'm only FORTY remember! (gah! Forty!) I could still be Zach's Demi if he wanted -nyah nyah.
But... if I was his mama I'd be quite proud.

I think I haven't learned the new trilogy as well because, well, it's not as good. And so we can have our periodic fake argument. Me: I liked number 1. Son: You mean The Phantom Menace (and I totally just had to ask him that so I could type it). Me: No, the real 1st one. Son: (eyeroll) That's number 4 Mom. It's a bonding thing we do.
And out of stubborness because Trek rules.
gforce
Trek > Wars, absolutely no question (well, in my mind anyway). Is there any more talk about the final 3 "episodes" of Star Wars, the one that were supposed to happen post-Empire defeat? I know that Lucas had talked about that a long way back, but I haven't heard anything new about it lately.
uaintjak
Gforce you ignorant slut.

Wars wipes the floor with Trek.

First of all. Han Solo? Way cooler and hotter than anyone in any Star Trek show ever.

Second of all. With the exception of occasionally screaming "KHAN!!!!!!!!!" and Spock's death scene, no one quotes Trek. But if I tell you you're a scruffy looking nerfherder, you would properly respond "Who's scruffy looking?"

Third. Wookies.

Fourth. Princess Leia? She was in a metal bikini. A metal bikini.

Um. *raises hand* I do.

I love Wars, too, though. Especially after seeing my 5 year-old in his new Darth Vadar Halloween costume. I'll post a pic soon.
gforce
*cries at lack of validation from uaintjak* Now I feel like that poor bugger you went to see Brave One with.

Better be nice, or I'll get MrsGryn to ban you!

MrsGryn, "Make it so!" <- Star Trek quote!

Anyways.... I didn't say I didn't LIKE Wars!
Towanda
jak does have a point with the whole Hot Han Solo thing. And Darth was THE original villian (to me anyway). He scared the crapola outta me as a kid - back in the old days when he would choke people from across the room and we didn't know about the whole redeemed Dad & feisty kid thing.
My son was Vader a few years ago for halloween too. He's nearly as tall as I am and had a great helmet and vest thingy. He put on his all black costume complete with shiny rubber boots and a great big flowy cape and walked down the hallway in character. The AC vent made his cape spread out and I wasn't expecting to see him and I admit that it freaked me out.

But, we Trekkies know that resistance is futile and jak will admit the greatness of Trek.

I think just about everyone one would agree with you on that. Empire was the bomb although I will admit my continuing Carrie Fisher crush was influenced more than a little bit by the Princess Leia bikini action in Return of the Jedi.

The best part of the second trilogy was the display of Yoda's overall BMF portrayal.

Tsy, you picture is now face down in the toilet, instead of on my hope chest, where it sat between pictures of Jude Law and Ewan MacGregor.

Oh, and PS, I photoshopped your face onto a storm trooper. No, no reason, why?

Did you call him a scruffy headed nerf herder?

I am a huge Star Wars fan, I was 5 when Empire came out and it was the first movie I ever saw in the theater.

But I actually liked the new ones also, minus the whining horrible acting Hayden Christiansen. I liked the rest of it though. Revenge of the Sith was dark and I liked that about it.

Ha! I was only 1 when the third one came out. "Return of the Jedi," that is. Not Episode III. 'Cause that would make me, like, 2.

I never really understood the hatred of Jar Jar, sure was he was a little annoying, but I really didn't get that bothered over him.

I thought that the new ones generally relied too much on special effects over story. Not to mention that there seemed too many elements that were there with an intention of marketing toys and crap. The whole enterprise (pardon the expression) just all seemed so commercial.

Canada apologizes profusely for allowing Hayden Christiansen to slip across the border. Him and Paul Walker both. If you found this trilogy of Star Wars flicks unwatchable, you can blame Canada for this one.
gforce
Although I'm no fan of Paul Walker by any means, I did see him in this movie on TV a year or two ago, and he actually wasn't... bad.

On topic, I have to wonder if part of the issues I had with the direction *points finger at George Lucas*. A lot of the scenes seem to have an almost Shakespearean theatricality that didn't suit the dialogue at all. I've seen Hayden Christiansen in other movies and he wasn't that bad.

I don't watch alot of movies, but I'm pretty sure I would stay away from anything with him just because of that "performance" he gave in the 2nd new one. But other than him, I thought the battle scenes were good, Natalie Portman was well, Natalie Portman and Ewan MacGregor was fantastic throughout all of them. I also liked all the unique bad guys. Don't get me wrong, I liked the original three better than most movies ever, but I thought the three new ones were entertaining.

I was thinking more of his acting abilities in this movie. This movie is sort of sci/fi, sort of just plain stupid. I mean if time travel to the past is considered science fiction, I'm not really sure what constitutes sci/fi I guess. As a Canadian watching American entertainment mostly, I just find it annoying to hear his "Canadian Accent". Keiffer Southerland can hide his accent and still look hot, why can't Paul Walker?
gforce
I've never even heard of that Timeline one. I'll be sure to miss it.
MrsGryn
Timeline was crap. Crap, I tell you!

Actually it was pretty frustrating because it could have been really good but just wasn't. It does have Gerard Butler, though, and that's a plus.
Towanda
Oh man - I'm going to totally discredit myself as a sci-fi geek, but I didn't think Timeline was that horrible. I remember being very excited about it before it came out because the book was good. Then I remember seeing it and being dissapointed it didn't match the book better, but all in all, if it came up on my tivo suggestions, I'd probably watch it.
But then, I also sat through that futuristic bug one (Starship Troopers) more than once too...
Ronnieroller
I don't know if this belongs in the sci/fi movie section but it is William Shatner so ...

This is just a take off on the I Am Canadian Rant. Just thought you guys would enjoy it some.

Uh, that's because Starship Troopers RAWKED!

Yes it was awful, but it was a good awful. Also, people shot things, blew things up, and got eaten by giant killer bugs. I mean, that was some good shit. Plus, Caspar VanDien? The HAWT. And it had Doogie.

There is good scifi, bad scifi, and bad good scifi. Star Wars? Good scifi. New Star Wars? Bad scifi. Starship Troopers? Bad good scifi.
Haunted Rain
Starship Troopers rulez! Truly awesome movie, that. It has almost everything.

Star Wars sucks donkey dick. I will never understand that crap. Blah. Star Trek is better.

None of them hold a candle to the Matrix or Terminator trilogies, though.

28 Days Later - awesome (not a zombie movie, don't even get me started), awesome movie. Genius. I love that post-apocalyptic stuff. It's good training, really. I admire the use of the butcher knife in that flick. Did you see all the different endings on the DVD?

Twelve Monkeys. That was good, too. I liked Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis together in that.
