I don't consider Vanessa a great player, just overbearing. As far as she was concerned her game was the only game that mattered, and weirdly no one ever corrected her on the issue. If they had, she would have worked hard to evict them the way she did James when he mentioned she was playing too hard.

 

The best gameplay on her part was latching on to the Austwins and using them as meat shields. Too much of the house was on to her early on for her to last without them. I'd call that a failing on the Austwin's part.

So if, by your own summation, everybody knew Vanessa was 'playing too hard' and yet made it to the final HoH and was one question away from winning the game- how is that not a great game?

 

The only difference I see between her play and that of the 'great' players of the past: Will, Dan, Danielle; is that she played a more outwardly confrontational/emotional style of play. But even so, on the spectrum of other winners she was far less overbearing than EvilDick or Rachel.

 

You bring up the classic connundrum of social games like BB: How much is too much.

 

Clearly, Steve was convinced he couldn't beat Vanessa. It seems like the jury would have voted for Vanessa in F2, so I think that plus her managing to manipulate herself to the end, is the very definition of great play,

 

Personally I think she's Top 5 all-time.

I would disagree with you about top five because of all the game moves Vanessa made, the one she didn't make is what ended up costing her the game. For the second half of the season she never saw that Steve was actually gonna cut her when he had a chance. Take someone like Derrick or Dan, when they were in the top three, they were convinced...and correctly so that both people were gonna take them to final two.

 

But when Vanessa got to the top three, she was convinced both would take her and she was wrong. All season long, all the moves she made and the way she manipulated people, she thought she had Steve in her back pocket. But we saw it for a lot of the second half of the season. He would tell us in the DR or on the feeds that he didn't trust her. We saw him tell us he wanted to cut her when he got the chance. And the minute he finally got it, he did.

 

Unfortunately for her, I think what ended up costing her was that she never saw Steve as a threat...just a number. And in the end, he got her.

 

I think if she would have won she would be somewhere in my top 10. But really the only person that has ever not won that I would put in my top 5 would be Danielle Reyes. She was masterful but got screwed over because the jury saw her DRs. If they didn't see her DRs, she would have had an easy win and then she's talked about with Dan, Derrick and Will best player ever discussion every time.

I disagree that Vanessa saw that Steve wanted to get rid of her. She saw it. There just wasn't much she could do about it.

 

The reality is that everyone that was left would have gotten rid of her. Some would have done it sooner than others. Steve was just the least likely to do it.

 

The flaw in Vanessa's game was that she was too much of a control freak to hide what she was up to. Yet she was so desperate to hide that she was behind the strategy of the group that the only people who didn't fear being used as a meat shield was the person who was too cocky to see that no one was safe with her.

 

That's very different from Derrick's game last year. He controlled everything but was so chill about it that everyone trusted him.

I thought Vanessa played the best game of all of them this year. However, top 5? I don't think so. Derrick, Dan, Jun, Dr. Will and, yes, Maggie, as horrible as she was, played better games. But, Vanessa would be in my top 10.

And, I think that she did read Steve; unfortunately too late, for her. However, if you look at her last 5 competitors (Julia, Steve, Austin, Johnny Mac and Liz), she had to get rid of the three people who would have never taken her (Johnny Mac, Steve and Austin). That was some pretty difficult navigating. And, she came within one question of pulling it off.

Did Jeff interview her, I watched him live the day after the show and he only had Steve and Liz. And Steve was on the Talk. I read her girlfriend proposed to her right after the show. Now we have to wait to see if she does have a show coming on called Poker Face. Hopefully she just disappears forever after losing so bad to a kid.

Someone bought an Asstin switch plate cover. It must have been him, because nobody here would want to flick his switch, and I don't think he has any fans willing to spend $9.99 + S&H.

 

Johnny Mac, however, has sold three so far. I'm betting that a certain HTer (cough) ScrambledLegs (cough) is waiting for delivery as I type.

If you check the above e-bay link again, you'll notice that the signed pictures are not doing very well. Austin's picture has been discounted 25% down to $18.75. However, I am pretty sure that it started out around $35, so whoever is selling the picture is pretty much in fire sale mode.

 

Also, this is the first group of HGs that haven't tried to sell any of their shit on e-bay. I wonder if BB put the kibosh on that activity.
